# Note from the Arranger and Conductor [[Concert Programs/Marvel of Music, June 12, 2025/Joel Windsor|Joel Windsor]]
I may have mentioned it a couple of times tonight, but you can't really blame me. This evening is a milestone for me; my eldest graduates a member of the Notre Dame Collegiate Music Hall of Fame with a Diamond Record. This absolutely influenced my recommendation for a Grade 12 Feature piece, such that I do each year. If you read a bit about how this song came to be, you'll understand exactly why.
Lead singer of [OneRepublic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OneRepublic) Ryan Tedder wrote this song for his then four-year-old son. In it he charges and implores his son to live life to the fullest. Tedder himself explained that it is inspired by the directive of *carpe diem*, "seize the day".
> "So for every day that you're on this earth, for every minute that you have, the whole idea is doing nothing less than exactly what you feel you're supposed to do and squeezing every last drop out of life every day, regardless of the difficulties or trials that you face."
> - Ryan Tedder
It is what we all hope for each of our children. We hope that at the end of it all, they can say with clarity "I Lived".
# Lyrics
Hope when you take that jump you don't fear the fall
Hope when the water rises you built a wall
Hope when the crowd screams out it's screaming your name
Hope if everybody runs you choose to stay
Hope that you fall in love and it hurts so bad
The only way you can know you give it all you have
And I hope that you don't suffer but take the pain
Hope when the moment comes you'll say
I, I did it all
I, I did it all
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places the things that I did
Yeah, with every broken bone
I swear I lived
Hope that you spend your days but they all add up
And when that sun goes down hope you raise your cup
I wish that I could witness all your joy and all your pain
But until my moment comes, I'll say
I, I did it all
I, I did it all
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places the things that I did
Yeah, with every broken bone
I swear I lived
(With every broken bone)
I swear I lived
(With every broken bone)
I swear I
I, I did it all
I, I did it all
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places the things that I did
Yeah, with every broken bone
I swear I lived
