The *Musica Spiritu* Awards are being introduced in the 2025/2026 School Year to fill the same purpose as the former *Distinguished Musician Awards* once sponsored by the Canadian Band Association.
The Canadian Band Association sponsored those awards for music programs managed by members of member associations, including the Alberta Band Association, however ceased sponsoring those awards this year. The spirit and intention behind the awards, however, are very close to the spirit of music education at Notre Dame Collegiate.
*Musica Spiritu* is latin for "Music in Spirit", and aligns with Notre Dame Collegiate's motto *Spiritu et Veritate*, "Spirit and Truth". Recipients are not necessarily the musicians with the highest mark in a class, although their academic standing is certainly considered. The recognition is given in honour of superior musicianship, leadership, mentorship, dependability and collaborative spirit.
Students who demonstrate great facility on their instruments, lead through action and engagement, support their fellow musicians, can be depended upon by their peers and their conductors, and seek to develop the full ensemble intentionally are all considered for this award. One award may be given for every ensemble, and multiple may be given if the ensemble is at least 40 musicians in size.
