![[2024-2025 Medicine Hat.jpg]] # Program Notes by [[Adrian B. Sims]] The modern world can be fast-paced, invigorating and erratic; it is filled with opportunity, exuberance and tragedy, all at once. We are constantly bombarded with notifications and life obstacles, and for many, this constant multitasking and juggling of responsibilities can be overwhelming. In such a world, it is important to take moments to experience peace, reflect on the past, and envision possibilities for the future. *Haven* explores the concept of living in a turbulent world while maintaining inner peace and stability. The opening measures bring a sense of timeless tranquility - a space free from all unpeaceful things. As the work continues, we encounter the outside world again and learn how to maintain peace of mind in the volatile environment that surrounds us. A re-introduction of themes from the opening serves as a reminder of our strength and ability to work through challenges. The work ends in a celebration of our newly discovered inner peace that has helped to inspire a better world around us. ### Comments from Mr. Windsor For the majority of my high school musicians, this description of their world is exact. Thankfully the story told in *Haven* matches the story of our young musicians' lives thus far. Each of our musicians have had peaceful moments shattered by the turbulence of the world; this can be something orbit-shifting like a flood, tsunami or pandemic, or it can be something much more individual and personal. Each person in this ensemble has had to overcome challenges that have tested their ability to maintain their best nature. I'm so pleased that I've had the chance to see each of these students face a challenge, stay true to themselves, and emerge stronger on the other side. I believe *Haven* encapsulates the challenge, the journey, and the success worthy of celebration of each of these students. Indeed, I believe my students easily inspire all of us to better the world around us.
