In 2009 CBC aired on their Sunday Edition a radio series called "20 Pieces that Changed the World". These are pieces that Robert Harris deemed so influential as to have impacted a shift in world culture, politics and society. Your task will include a good deal of listening, including listening to at least 2 episodes of the series, the original music itself, and perhaps other music alongside it. It will also include providing a response to these episodes with the intention of proving or disproving Harris' theory that the music in question "changed the world". # Review the Outline of the Series From here, select at least 2 episodes that you would like to focus on. The Overview of the series will provide you with a list of the 20 episodes and Harris' offerings of pieces that changed the world. You will need to listen to at least two episodes in their entirety, but you may select from that list in The Overview to start from. # Episode Responses Think of each episode as either an expository essay or a compare and contrast essay. In each episode, the presenters offer a piece of music they suggest "changed the world", but they also offer at least one other piece (usually two) as either a further explanation or a comparison. In your response for a minimum of 2 episodes, offer a different perspective of how the pieces changed the world. 1. What piece did the presenters suggest was the one that changed the world? How so? 2. It could be argued that the piece of music only changed the world because of some other outside influence, such as a different piece or a societal context. Do you believe that the change in the world could have only happened with this piece of music, or is it possible that the change in the world may have happened without this piece of music? Explain your opinion. 3. Could it be argued that one of the other pieces of music in the episode was actually the piece that changed the world, and not the one the presenters chose? Why or why not? # The 21st Piece That Changed The World After having heard some of the rationale for why a piece might have changed the world, offer your own suggestion for a piece that may have changed the world (or at least a significant portion of it). What rationale did you use to identify that piece? What conditions were in place to enable that piece of music to have the impact it did? # Submission Format You may choose to submit your response in any format you wish; essay, podcast, a 'YouTube Review' or similar, a slideshow, etc. It must answer the questions posed in this assignment as completely as possible, but how you present your responses is up to you. # The Episodes ### Episode 1: Elvis Presley's That's Alright Mama) ![[Episode 1.mp3]] ### Episode 2: Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona ![[Episode 2.mp3]] ### Episode 3: We Shall Overcome ![[Episode 3.mp3]] ### Episode 4: The first million-seller ![[Episode 4.mp3]] ### Episode 5: Dylan goes electric ![[Episode 5.mp3]] ### Episode 6: Ludwig van Beethoven's Eroica ![[Episode 6.mp3]] ### Episode 7: Louis Armstrong's West End Blues ![[Episode 7.mp3]] ### Episode 8: Reggae ![[Episode 8.mp3]] ### Episode 9: Public Enemy's Fight The Power ![[Episode 9.mp3]] ### Episode 10: Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? ![[Episode 10.mp3]] ### Episode 11: Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive ![[Episode 11.mp3]] ### Episode 12: Richard Wagner's The Prelude from Tristan und Isolde ![[Episode 12.mp3]] ### Episode 13: Gregorian Chants ![[Episode 13.mp3]] ### Episode 14: The Beatles' Please, Please Me ![[Episode 14.mp3]] ### Episode 15: Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring ![[Episode 15.mp3]] ### Episode 16: The Carter Family, Will The Circle Be Unbroken ![[Episode 16.mp3]] ### Episode 17: From the Broadway musical Show Boat, Old Man River ![[Episode 17.mp3]] ### Episode 18: The French national anthem La Marseillaise ![[Episode 18.mp3]] ### Episode 19: Charlie Parker's Ornithology ![[Episode 19.mp3]] ### Episode 20: Camille Saint Saens' Danse Macabre ![[Episode 20.mp3]]
