# Breezin' Thru Fingerings Game *Applicable to Grade 7 and 8 Concert Band, Grade 7, 8 and 9 Strings, and Grade 7 and 8 Stage Band* Breezin' Thru has a new game called the "Fingerings Game". At this point, each group listed above will be expected to complete Level 1 of this game as an assignment. It does not apply to Theory marks, but rather to Skills and Techniques Marks. # Musical Expression Skills Assessments Students must perform a piece of music from any of the available resources (Royal Conservatory of Music, Festival Performance Solos, Small Ensembles) that demonstrate the following skills. These performances may also lead to opportunities to perform in the local music festival. Performing Levels shown are *minimum* levels. A student may select a higher level, but can never revert to a lower level than one they have performed in previous years. Students may choose a modern piece that achieves the same outcome, either as a solo or as a duet/trio/small ensemble with partners. They must receive approval from Mr. Windsor, and Mr. Windsor will arrange, if possible. If not possible, students will need to use a selection from pre-published works. ## Concert Band and Strings Musical Expression Plan |Grade|Performing Level|Skill Focus Area| |-|-|-| |7|Preparatory/Beginner|Rhythm and Articulations| |8|Preparatory/Beginner|Lyrical with Dynamics| |9|Level 1|Rhythm and Articulations| |10|Level 2|Lyrical with Dynamics| |11|Level 2|Rhythm and Articulations| |12|Level 3|Own Choice| ## Stage Band and Steel Pans Musical Expression Plan |Grade|Improvisation Duration|Specific Skill| |-|-|-| |7|Riff/Motif|Repetitive, Simple, no more than 4 notes| |8|2- to 4-Bar Idea|A riff that has been embellished rhythmically| |9|Full Phrase|Use a riff that is evident in chord changes| |10|Full Solo|Use of arpeggios to outline chords given| |11|Full Solo or at least three Trade 4s|Use of leading tones to set up chord changes| |12|Extended Trade 4s|Building off partner riffs, sets up and outlines chord changes| # Instrument-Specific Skills Each instrument in every ensemble at each level should be expected to complete certain tasks. These are listed in the table below. Scales should be completed across one octave at 90 beats per minute, unless otherwise specified. Students may select for their [[Old Skills and Techniques Overview#Musical Expression Skills Assessments|Musical Expression Skills Assessment]] a piece that adequately addresses the scale expected of them for their level and be allowed to use that as an instrument-specific skill assessment. For example, a Grade 8 flute player may choose a Preparatory Lyrical piece in E-Flat Major, and that one recording will apply to both assignments, reducing the amount of work by one. These scales may be assessed either by recording or in-class. | Instrument/Grade | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12 | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ | ---------------------- | ---------------------------------- | --------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- | | Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Trombone, Baritone BC, Tuba, Guitars, Percussion, Piano | B-Flat Hexachord, B-Flat Major | G Minors, E-Flat Major | B-Flat Chromatic, C Minors | F Major, D Minors | Full Range Chromatic, E-Flat Pentatonic | A-Flat Major, F Minors | | Clarinets, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Baritone TC | C Hexachord, C Major | A Minors, F Major | C Chromatic, D Minors | G Major, E Minors | Full Range Chromatic, F Pentatonic | B-Flat Major, G Minors | | Alto and Bari Sax | G Hexachord, G Major | E Minors, C Major | G Chromatic, A Minors | D Major, B Minors | Full Range Chromatic, C Pentatonic | F Major, D Minors | | French Horn | F Hexachord, F Major | D Minors, B-Flat Major | F Chromatic, G Minors | C Major, A Minors | Full Range Chromatic, B-Flat Pentatonic | E-Flat Major, C Minors | | Violin | D Major, G Major | A Major, C Major | D Chromatic, G Chromatic | G Major 2 Octaves, D Major 2 Octaves | B Minors | F# Minors | | Viola, Cello | D Major, G Major | A Major, C Major | G Chromatic, C Chromatic | G Major 2 Octaves, C Major 2 Octaves | E Minors | B Minors | | Steel Pans | C Major, D Major | F Major, E-Flat Major | Full Range Chromatic, F Pentatonic | I-IV-V Arpeggios in C Major and F Major | I-IV-V Arpeggios in D Major and E-Flat Major | Double-Scale in Thirds for G Major |
